Zhilei Zhang Eyes Joshua Fight After Wilder Victory

Shot At World Titles: Zhang’s Resurgence and Gunning For Usyk

Heavyweight contender Zhilei Zhang is back in the limelight, targeting world titles and eyeing a showdown with Anthony Joshua, following his spectacular knockout victory over Deontay Wilder in Saudi Arabia. With a record of 27-2-1 (22 KOs), Zhang’s triumph has breathed new life into his career, just three months after a surprising defeat to Joseph Parker.

“Losing to Joseph Parker was silly,” Zhang admitted. “I highly underestimated him and I learned a lot from underestimating him and the fight. I know now what I can do.”

Overcoming the Odds Against Wilder

In the highly anticipated 5 vs 5 event, Zhang showcased his prowess by dominating Wilder, who himself had been defeated by Parker the previous year. Early in the bout, Zhang respected Wilder’s renowned power but soon realised the former WBC heavyweight champion was struggling to find his rhythm. This realisation prompted Zhang to shift gears and take control.

A powerful right hand in the fifth round visibly staggered Wilder, who responded with a shaky smile. Zhang seized the moment, delivering another devastating right that sent Wilder crashing to the canvas.

“After I landed the [first] shot I think he’s off-balance but he’s also hurt. Then I landed one more shot and that was it,” Zhang recounted. The fight was halted by the referee with Wilder back on his feet, much to the victor’s approval. “The referee is the man who is in charge of the fight so we [as fighters] have to listen to him,” Zhang said of Wilder’s complaints about the stoppage. “He stopped the fight for a good reason. If he did not [stop the fight] I would have got up and let my bombs go and that won’t end well for him [Wilder].”
