Jaron Ennis Defends IBF Welterweight Title with Knockout Victory
Ennis Triumphs in Philadelphia
Jaron Ennis, celebrated as the “future of boxing,” demonstrated why he holds this title after a decisive fifth-round stoppage against David Avanesyan at the Wells Fargo Center. In a bout that marked his return to the ring after a year’s hiatus, the 27-year-old American showcased a blend of skill and power that proved too formidable for the seasoned Russian challenger.

Competitive Early Rounds Lead to Dominant Finish
The fight began with a series of competitive rounds, with Ennis absorbing some significant strikes from Avanesyan. However, as the match progressed, Ennis escalated his intensity, much to the delight of the over 14,000 spectators in his hometown arena. The pivotal moment came in the fifth round when Ennis sent Avanesyan to the canvas, unleashing a flurry of punches that continued until the round concluded.
Fight Ends on Doctor’s Advice
The sustained attack from Ennis led to the intervention of Avanesyan’s corner and the ringside doctor, who determined that Avanesyan could not continue, effectively ending the fight. Ennis, who remains undefeated after 32 professional bouts, reflected on his performance with a critical eye, stating, “I felt like my timing was a little off.” Despite this self-criticism, his promoter, Eddie Hearn, expressed nothing but confidence in his protégé: “If he thinks that performance was off, the world of boxing ought to be very, very afraid,” Hearn remarked. “He’s the future of boxing. That’s what he is.”
Ennis Eyes Future Challenges
Fresh off his victory, Ennis is already looking forward, aiming to elevate his competition by challenging notable figures such as Terence Crawford. “I want the big names,” Ennis declared, signalling his readiness to ascend to even greater heights in the boxing world.
In addition to Ennis’s victory, the event featured a successful defence by Australia’s Skye Nicolson, who retained her WBC featherweight title with a unanimous decision over Dyana Vargas.
