Daniel Dubois survived two first-half knockdowns to stop Fabio Wardley in the eleventh round of an all-British heavyweight war at Co-Op Live in Manchester, taking the WBO title in a fight that instantly entered the conversation for Fight of the Year.
Wardley dropped Dubois inside the first fifteen seconds with an overhand right, and did it again in round three with the same shot, twice threatening to end the fight before it had properly started. Dubois climbed off the floor both times, gradually took over behind his jab and superior boxing through the middle rounds, and eventually forced the stoppage in round eleven when Wardley, badly cut and increasingly unsteady, turned his back into the ropes under sustained fire. Dubois moved to 23-3 with 22 knockouts; Wardley fell to 20-1-1.

By Dubois’s own account, the turning point wasn’t tactical so much as personal. Trainer Don Charles reportedly shook him between rounds after the second knockdown, and Dubois responded by taking over the fight from round four onward, working behind his jab and finding his range as Wardley’s face and body began to show the toll of the pace. “It was a war. We came through the sticky moments,” Dubois said afterwards. “I know I’ve got heart, bundles of heart. I’m a warrior in there.”
Wardley’s nose, and his legs, gave way late
By round seven Wardley’s nose was bleeding heavily enough for repeated inspections from the ringside doctor, and by round ten he was visibly unsteady on his feet even between clean punches. He was still allowed to continue into round eleven, when Dubois finally forced the finish.
An immediate rematch clause, and a fractured division
Queensberry Promotions confirmed a rematch clause is already in place, meaning this rivalry is far from finished. The result also lands into a heavyweight picture that’s more open than it has been in years, with the WBO strap now in Dubois’s hands alongside a scattered field of other titleholders across the other sanctioning bodies. For two fighters who have shared a British domestic rivalry for years, this was as decisive an answer as either is likely to get for now.
