Ryan Garcia is a world champion again. The Californian produced the most complete performance of his career to overwhelm Mario Barrios at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, dropping the WBC welterweight titleholder in the opening round and cruising to a lopsided unanimous decision on scores of 118-109, 119-108 and 120-107.
A statement comeback
It was Garcia’s first fight back at world-title level since his loss to Rolando Romero in May 2025, and the manner of the win answered plenty of the questions that had followed him into the ring. Barrios, the naturally bigger man and a fighter with genuine world-title pedigree of his own, was put down by a short left hand inside the opening three minutes and never fully recovered his rhythm.
From there Garcia dictated range and tempo, snapping his jab and timing Barrios with the counter left hand that has always been the most dangerous weapon in his arsenal. Barrios had his moments, particularly when he could get inside and work the body, but he was chasing the fight for long stretches and couldn’t find the finishing punch to change its course.
Garcia calls out Stevenson
With the WBC belt around his waist for the first time, Garcia wasted no time naming his next target. “You know who I want. He’s right there. Shakur Stevenson. Let’s go. Let’s run that,” Garcia said in his post-fight interview, pointing to the undisputed-minded Stevenson, who claimed a fourth divisional title of his own on the same weekend.
It’s a fight that would pit two of the sport’s most talked-about names against each other, though nothing has been agreed and Stevenson has other options on the table at 140lbs. Garcia’s promotional team have made no secret of wanting the biggest possible fights following the win, and a Stevenson clash would be exactly that.
Where both men go from here
The result moves Garcia to 25-2 and gives him a world title in a third weight class, while Barrios drops to 29-3-2 and will look to work his way back into the picture at 147lbs. For Garcia, a career that has been as much about headlines outside the ring as performances inside it now has a genuinely statement win to point to, and a live path to the kind of superfight that could define the rest of his career.
