McGregor’s UFC 303 Fight in Doubt: Replacement Possible

Uncertainty Surrounds Conor McGregor’s UFC 303 Fight

The upcoming UFC 303 fight between Conor McGregor and Michael Chandler faces significant uncertainty, with potential replacements being considered. Despite record-breaking ticket sales and high demand, questions persist about McGregor’s commitment to the event. This bout, scheduled for 29 June, marks McGregor’s first fight since his leg break and subsequent loss to Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 in 2021, his third defeat in his last four UFC outings.

Press Conference Cancellation and Speculation

The UFC originally scheduled a press conference for 3 June at the 3Arena in Dublin, but it was abruptly cancelled due to unspecified obstacles. McGregor addressed the situation, saying, “In consultation with the UFC, today’s press conference was canceled due to a series of obstacles outside of our control. I apologise to my Irish fans, and fans around the world, for the inconvenience and appreciate all your passion and support. I can’t wait to put on the greatest all-time show in the Octagon.”

This cancellation has intensified rumours about the fight being called off, especially after ESPN removed promotional material for the bout, and the UFC subsequently took down McGregor’s ‘free fights’ from YouTube.

Ariel Helwani on McGregor Replacement Possibility

MMA journalist Ariel Helwani has provided some insight into the situation, revealing that there is still hope for McGregor to participate. “No news at the moment. The hope is still that the fight is on. There is positivity, I’d say. But they have sent out feelers to see who might be able to fill in, either as a replacement or an entirely new fight at the top of the bill. Still developing, and still some time.”

The UFC is reportedly exploring potential replacements for McGregor, reflecting the fluid and evolving nature of the situation.

At 35, McGregor’s time in the UFC appears limited. He has ventured into various activities outside the Octagon, including becoming a part-owner in the Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship (BKFC). Recent sightings of McGregor partying at his Black Forge pub with his fiancée, just a month before the fight, have raised further questions about his focus and dedication.

UFC 303 Fight Card and Future Prospects

Despite the uncertainty, UFC 303 has already set a record for the biggest live gate with $20 million, and tickets for the press conference sold out within nine minutes. The current fight card includes:

  • Conor McGregor vs. Michael Chandler
  • Jamahal Hill vs. Carlos Ulberg
  • Joe Pyfer vs. Marc-Andre Barriault
  • Mayra Bueno Silva vs. Macy Chiasson
  • Ian Machado Garry vs. Michael Page

  • Carlos Hernandez vs. Rei Tsuruya
  • Ricky Simon vs. Vinicius Oliveira
  • Payton Talbott vs. Yanis Ghemmouri
  • Andrei Arlovski vs. Martin Buday

As the situation develops, fans and analysts alike eagerly await confirmation on whether McGregor will indeed headline UFC 303 or if a replacement will step in.
