Who is Joe McGrail?

McGrail, a 21-year-old sensation, has been unstoppable since transitioning to the professional circuit, boasting a flawless record of nine victories. His journey began with a bang, clinching a stoppage win over Francisco Rodriguez amidst the electric atmosphere of the Conor Benn vs. Chris Algieri and Katie Taylor vs. Firuza Sharipova blockbuster in December 2021.

Under the tutelage of esteemed coach Paul Stevenson at Everton Red Triangle, McGrail has honed his skills, drawing attention not only for his individual prowess but also for his familial ties to boxing. His brother Peter, also part of Matchroom’s stable, will be seeking redemption following a setback in December, adding to the familial narrative that enriches the sport.

Entry Into the Professional Scene

With an illustrious amateur career featuring 64 bouts and a National ABA Championship title, McGrail enters the professional realm with a formidable pedigree. His sights are firmly set on dominating the domestic featherweight division, setting ambitious goals to secure titles by the culmination of 2024.

Reflecting on his partnership with Matchroom, McGrail expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I’m made up and excited. I’m looking forward to making my mark on the big shows and showing people what I’m about. Teaming up with Matchroom and DAZN will do wonders for my career and give me a massive boost.”

Asserting his aggressive style, McGrail added, “I’m a good boxer but I throw my punches with bad intentions. I’m always trying to hurt whoever I’m in there with. I think people will like to watch that.”

Hometown Significance

The significance of debuting in his hometown of Liverpool is not lost on McGrail, who relishes the prospect of performing in front of family and friends. “I’m over the moon I’ll be making my big Matchroom debut in Liverpool. It means all my family and friends can be there.”

Looking ahead, McGrail outlined his roadmap, targeting an active year with incremental challenges. “If all goes to plan, I’ll get another three fights in this year. All of my fights up until now have been four and six rounders, but this next one is over eight and the next one after that is eight too.”

Matchroom Sport Chairman Eddie Hearn lauded McGrail’s signing, highlighting his flawless professional record and the anticipation surrounding the upcoming NXTGEN event. “I’m delighted to announce the signing of another outstanding fighter from Liverpool – Joe McGrail,” said Hearn. “April 27 is set to be a huge night for the McGrail family, with Peter looking to return to winning ways after his setback in December.”
